Smart Printer: Preparing and Printing Documents from Your Phone
What the store listings for HELPERG's Smart Printer app describe for scanning and printing from iPhone and Android, where they are unclear, and what to check about a printer first.
The form has to be on paper by the end of the afternoon. It is on your phone, the printer is across the room, and nobody has the software for it. Whether that works depends on things you can check before you tap Print: is the page legible, is it the right size, and can the phone reach the printer at all?
HELPERG’s printing app is listed as Smart Printer: Scan Master Pro on the App Store and as Printer Smart: Scan, Print PDF on Google Play. HELPERG’s catalogue gives HELPERG LLC as its publisher; the stores name HRHELPERG LLC as developer on the App Store and hrhelperg s.r.o. as seller and Google Play developer. This guide covers what the two listings describe, what they leave unclear, and a routine for getting a document from a phone onto paper.
What the app is for
Both listings carry the same description. The app is presented as a way to print “photos, documents, emails, web pages, and more”, in formats including PDF, DOC, XLS, PPT, JPG, PNG and TXT, with import from Dropbox and iCloud Drive. The listings also describe using the phone’s camera as a scanner for documents, IDs, passports, receipts, business cards and notes; scans “can be edited, filtered, and saved in various formats”.
Before printing, the listing describes a PDF preview and print settings for “the number of copies, page orientation, paper size, and more”. That preparation step matters: a preview catches a cropped edge or a sideways page before it costs paper.
On iPhone, the listing relies on AirPrint
The listing says printing works “thanks to AirPrint technology”, without “additional drivers or software”, and it names no other way of reaching a printer. AirPrint is Apple’s technology, and Apple’s own support pages set out what it needs:
- the printer has to support AirPrint, which Apple says is built into most popular printer models, and Apple publishes a search for AirPrint-enabled printers, although it notes that printers listed as USB-only support driverless printing only from a Mac connected by USB;
- the printer and the iPhone or iPad have to be on the same Wi-Fi network;
- AirPrint works over Wi-Fi or wired network connections, and Apple says AirPrint devices connected to a computer by Bluetooth, or to the USB port of an AirPort Base Station or AirPort Time Capsule, cannot use it.
So, for printing through AirPrint, the first check is about the printer, not the app. If your printer is not on Apple’s list, Apple’s advice is to check with the manufacturer. The listing describes broad Wi-Fi printer compatibility, but it does not name printer models or say how compatibility was established.
On Android, the listing describes an iPhone app
The Google Play listing uses the same text as the App Store one, including “printing and scanning directly from your iPhone”, AirPrint and import from iCloud Drive. AirPrint is Apple’s technology, and the Android listing does not describe how the Android version reaches a printer.
Read that as text carried over from the iPhone listing, not as a description of how the Android app behaves. Before relying on it, print a single test page on the printer you actually need to use.
What it costs
On the App Store the app is free to download with in-app purchases. On the US storefront the listing shows Pro Weekly Access at $7.99, Monthly PRO Access at $12.99, Pro 3-Month Access at $29.99, and two yearly options, at $79.99 and $39.99. The description does not say which features need Pro and which are free.
Google Play shows the “In-app purchases” notice for this app, and its app details give a range of $6.99 to $59.99 per item on the US storefront, again without saying which features the purchases unlock. On either platform, if you only need one document printed, check what the free version allows before you pay for anything, and note which plan you are choosing. On the App Store list, the lowest price, $7.99, is for Pro Weekly Access, and the app’s terms, linked from the App Store listing, say a Pro subscription “will automatically renew” for another week, month or year unless automatic renewal is turned off “in your iTunes account settings” at least 24 hours before the period ends.
A routine for one important document
An illustrative example. The form and the setting are invented.
You need to print a signed two-page application form at a shared office.
- Check the printer before the document. On iPhone, confirm that the printer is AirPrint-enabled and that your phone is on the same Wi-Fi network. On Android, find out how the office expects phones to print.
- Get a clean source. If the form is already a PDF, import it. If it is on paper, scan it with the camera on a flat surface with even light.
- Preview every page. Look for cropped edges, pages in the wrong order, a page turned sideways and signatures that came out faint.
- Set the job. Choose the number of copies, the orientation and the paper size that is actually loaded in the printer.
- Print one copy first. If it is right, print the rest.
- Collect it immediately. On a shared printer, a page with your signature, or a copy of an ID, should not sit in the tray.
If the form needs editing or a signature added before it is printed, that is a PDF job rather than a printing job; our guide to PDF Edit & Convert covers it. If the recipient asks for a fax rather than paper, see our guide to FAX: send from phone.
What the listing does not claim to fix
Nothing in the listing says the app can make an unsupported printer compatible, bring an offline printer back onto the network or deal with paper and toner. If the phone cannot see the printer, check the network and the printer first.
Scans of IDs deserve extra care
The listing invites you to scan IDs and passports. Before you do, note what the store disclosures say. On the App Store, the privacy label states that identifiers and usage data may be used to track you across apps and websites owned by other companies. On Google Play, the data-safety section declares “No data collected”, says the app may share device or other IDs with third parties, and states “Data isn’t encrypted”, which Google Play explains as data not being transferred over a secure connection, and “Data can’t be deleted”. That “No data collected” declaration does not match the App Store label, which lists identifiers and usage data that may be collected, or the privacy policy, which lists data the app transmits, including IP address, hardware ID and advertising identifiers. The policy, published by hrhelperg s.r.o., names analytics providers and advertising services, including Google AdMob, Facebook and TikTok, among its data processors, and, under other services, OpenAI, without saying what OpenAI processes.
The app’s terms add one more thing to weigh. They say that by uploading content, including electronic documents or images, “to the Services”, you grant the app a “nonexclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, sublicensable, and transferable license” to “use, reproduce, publicly display, distribute, modify, publicly perform, and translate” it, and that copies may be retained under the privacy policy. Neither the terms nor the listings say which of the app’s features upload anything.
These are the developer’s own declarations, not independent audits, and none of them says where scans are stored. Keep copies of identity documents only for as long as you need them.
