Where AI tools may assist GCI Media's work, and the things they may never produce.
What AI may do here
AI tools may help organise research, draft an outline, tighten copy, format tables and markup, and — later — assist with translation. These are production aids, and their output is checked by a person before it is published.
What AI may never do
AI is never used to generate a quote, an interview, a statistic, a source, a person, or a fact about a city. If a sentence asserts something about the world, a human has verified it against a named source. A source that cannot be opened and read is not a source.
We do not generate illustrative imagery for journalistic or analytical articles. An image on an article is either something we produced, or a licensed image of the actual place or subject, credited to its creator.
Why we publish this
Because the failure mode is specific and worth naming: a language model will produce a fluent, plausible, correctly-formatted citation to a paper that does not exist. The only defence is that a person opened the source. That check is not optional here, and it is the reason an article can be delayed but not the reason it can be wrong.
Disclosure
Where AI assistance was substantial enough to affect the substance of a piece — rather than its grammar or formatting — the article says so.
