Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord

The Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord stands on Namesti Jiriho z Podebrad in Prague's Vinohrady. Designed by the Slovene architect Joze Plecnik and completed in 1932, it is a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

Also known as Kostel Nejsvetejsiho Srdce Pane.

Why it matters

Plecnik gave the church a single wide tower with a glazed clock rather than paired spires, and clad the body in dark brick studded with projecting blocks - a deliberate refusal of the Gothic revival idiom expected of a parish church at the time.

Good for

  • Architecture & designOne of the few Plecnik buildings outside Ljubljana and Prague Castle, and the most unusual church exterior in the city.
