Powder Tower

The Powder Tower is a Gothic city gate in Prague, begun in 1475 as one of the original entrances to the Old Town and completed in its present form in the late nineteenth century.

Also known as Prasna brana.

Why it matters

It was left unfinished for centuries and used to store gunpowder, which is where the name comes from; the decorated upper stages are a nineteenth-century completion rather than medieval work.
