Municipal House
The Municipal House is an Art Nouveau civic building of 1912 beside the Powder Tower in Prague's Old Town, containing the Smetana Hall, restaurants and exhibition rooms. Czechoslovak independence was declared here in 1918.
Also known as Obecni dum.
Why it matters
It was built as a deliberate Czech statement in a city whose public architecture was largely German-speaking, and almost every notable Czech artist of the period worked on some part of it.
