The Savoy

The Savoy is a hotel on the Strand in London, opened in 1889 beside the Savoy Theatre, Grade II listed, and the first luxury hotel in Britain to be lit throughout by electricity.

Why it matters

Included for its infrastructure firsts - electric light, lifts and constant hot water - and for the entrance court, which is the only street in Britain where traffic drives on the right.
