The Battery

The Battery is a public park at the southern tip of Manhattan, on land largely created by landfill over the site of the seventeenth-century shore battery that gives it its name. It is managed by New York City Parks with the Battery Conservancy.

Also known as Battery Park.

Why it matters

The park is where Manhattan's edge is most obviously artificial: Castle Clinton stood offshore when it was built in 1811 and now sits well inland, which makes the scale of the landfill legible on the ground.
