Park Guell
Park Guell is a public park on Carmel hill in Barcelona's Gracia district, laid out by Antoni Gaudi between 1900 and 1914 as an unrealised housing development for Eusebi Guell. The municipality acquired it in 1922 and it is now managed by the city.
Also known as Parc Güell.
Why it matters
The park is the residue of a property venture that failed: only two of the intended houses were ever built. What survives is the infrastructure - terraces, viaducts and the serpentine bench - designed to make a steep site habitable.
