Biblioteca de Catalunya

The Biblioteca de Catalunya is the national library of Catalonia, housed since 1940 in the fifteenth-century Gothic halls of the former Hospital de la Santa Creu in the Raval.

Also known as Biblioteca Nacional de Catalunya.

Why it matters

The reading rooms are the hospital's original stone wards, so the building's span and vaulting were designed for beds rather than books and have simply been reused.
