Fort Canning Park
Fort Canning Park is a hill park in central Singapore that has held a fourteenth-century settlement, a colonial governor's residence and a nineteenth-century fort, and now contains gardens, archaeological remains and a Second World War command bunker.

Why it matters
The hill is the reason Singapore is where it is: it was the high ground of the pre-colonial settlement, and every later administration reused it rather than starting elsewhere.

Good for
- Outdoor day — A shaded hill park in the middle of the city, with several separate stair entrances.
- Quiet places — Markedly cooler and quieter than the surrounding streets.
