Gardens by the Bay

Gardens by the Bay is a public garden on reclaimed land beside Marina Bay in Singapore's Downtown Core. It opened in 2012 and combines open parkland with enclosed climate-controlled conservatories and a grove of tall steel planted structures.

Why it matters

The gardens are a piece of infrastructure as much as a park: the conservatories are cooled using energy recovered from horticultural waste, and the Supertrees carry the venting for that system.

Good for

  • Outdoor dayThe outdoor gardens are freely accessible and large enough to absorb several hours on foot.
  • With childrenThe scale, the elevated walkway and the conservatories give a route that works without a fixed itinerary.
