Rockefeller Center is a complex of commercial buildings between Fifth and Sixth Avenues in Midtown Manhattan, built from 1930 to 1939 around a sunken plaza and a private pedestrian street.

The Channel Gardens and sunken plaza were a commercial device to pull pedestrians off Fifth Avenue into the middle of the block, and they still work exactly as intended.
