Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau
The Sant Pau site in Barcelona's Eixample district was built as a hospital between 1902 and 1930 to designs by Lluis Domenech i Montaner and his son Pere Domenech i Roura. Clinical services moved to an adjacent modern building in 2009 and the historic pavilions reopened as a visitable site.
Also known as Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau.
Why it matters
Sant Pau was built as an argument about how hospitals should work: separate pavilions in gardens, linked by tunnels, on the theory that light and air were themselves treatment. The plan is set at 45 degrees to the Cerda grid.
