Parc de la Ciutadella
Parc de la Ciutadella is a public park in Barcelona's Ciutat Vella, laid out on the site of an eighteenth-century fortress and remodelled for the Universal Exposition of 1888. It contains the Catalan parliament, a lake and the Cascada monumental fountain.
Why it matters
The park exists because the citadel was demolished: the fortress had been built to hold the city rather than defend it, and clearing it was a political act before it was a landscaping one.
